Bring the Excitement of Drawing to Your School Today!

Our innovative, standards-based Draw to Learn program is designed for alternative education sites, public and private schools, charter schools, and home schools. The lessons are fast-paced and fun. Students learn to draw from observation, imagination, and memory while they earn credit for visual art.

"Draw to Learn is a perfect fit for our alternative education program. Rob is a gifted teacher and has the rare ability to connect with students and get them to explore their potential through drawing. The proof is in the amazing work that is produced."

--Sandy Mast, Director of Alternative Education
Santa Cruz County Office of Education

Draw to Learn Goals

  • Help students to realize their innate drawing abilities

  • Develop each student's drawing skills based on his or her particular interests

  • Help students to transfer their drawing skills to school and/or work projects

  • Guide students in exploring careers that utilize drawing skills

Drawing coach, Rob Court, engages each student at their own ability level; then challenges them to take their skills to the next level. Rob shares his experiences as a professional graphic designer and illustrator and encourages students to explore drawing opportunities in art, science, design, technology, and entertainment.

How It Works

First, Rob gets everyone to reconnect with their childhood thrill of drawing--a necessary foundation for learning basic skills. As students progress each week, he modifies the lessons to fit their needs and interests.

Shaylah, like most high school students, thought she couldn't draw. Her first lesson was to draw basic cartoon characters with lines and shapes. She then completed lessons that introduced her to skills such as perception of space and measuring proportions. Her skills improved dramatically while drawing after a number of important artists in history. Shown above is a landscape she drew while looking at a sketch by Vincent Van Gogh. Shaylah's confidence grew and her desire to explore realism blossomed. Above is a human skull she drew from a photograph.

Lessons are designed to fit your school's curriculum and visual art program. For example, Rob can set up classroom lessons that combine drawing in sketchbooks with life science, or he can utilize online drawing studios to work with independent studies students. With an emphasis on composition, the drawing lessons correlate with the following visual art standards: artistic perception; creative expression; historical and cultural context; aesthetics valuing.

A special drawing blog is set up for each school. Each week, students' drawings are posted to the blog with Rob's comments and suggestions. This gives students a personal narrative evaluation of their work while bolstering self-esteem as their work is shared on the Internet.

Although Draw to Learn lessons are set up for middle and high school students, they can be easily adapted for elementary school students. Class size is limited to a maximum of 10 students. All new students start in the 'skills group'. Students who demonstrate the ability to pursue a more advanced direction, or return after completing the 8-week course, are moved to the 'applied skills' track.

8-Week Draw to Learn Course Based on the Elements of Art

All you need to provide is the classroom, #2 SOFT pencils, and lots of 8.5 x 11" white copier paper. Rob will do the rest!
